How to Scoop Water in FIRE PLANES

Fill the tank from lakes and ponds without turning a refill into a crash.

How to Scoop Water

Empty tanks lose rounds. FIRE PLANES does not let you spray forever: you scoop, you dump, you scoop again. The official description says “scoop water from lakes,” and every public session confirms the same rule. This page is the how-to-get-water guide so you stop flying dry over a town that is already lighting up.

If you have not set invert pitch yet, do that on Controls first. A bad pitch mapping is the number one reason a scoop becomes a crash.

What counts as a scoop

You refill by putting the airframe into a lake or pond until the tank registers full. Comments under Superlex’s video all point the same way:

  • “Refill water by landing your plane in the ponds.”
  • “You just have to go in the water.”
  • “Get close to the lakes” — more common on PlayStation, where analog pitch holds a flat attitude.

Hovering fifty studs above blue terrain does nothing. Crossing a narrow river at speed often does nothing. The game wants a committed splashdown on a body of water large enough to sit in.

Official thumbnails show the yellow twin-engine amphibian lifting off a lake with a dark water shadow under the hull. That is the picture to copy: hull wet, wings level, then climb.

Step-by-step refill

  1. Spot water after takeoff. Procedural maps always include lakes, but Mega Fire smoke can hide them. Turn early; do not discover you are dry over the last house.
  2. Reduce descent. Come in slightly nose-up so you settle instead of spear the surface.
  3. Touch the water and stay in it for a beat. If the tank does not move, you only skipped. Flatten and wait.
  4. Confirm the tank is full before you pull up. Climbing half-full wastes the approach.
  5. Climb to a dump altitude where a missed pass is a go-around, not a tree strike. Superlex’s “higher is safer” note is about this climb, not about scooping from the stratosphere.
  6. Fly to a fire that actually matters — houses, people, the Town Defense perimeter. See Protect Towns.

Starter vs tanker vs helicopter

The starter single-engine is short and quick. It is easy to over-rotate on the water and hop. Use small pitch inputs.

The large amphibian (the $500k-class twin in June 2026 shop footage, yellow and red in official art) is a boat with wings. It wants a longer, flatter run. It also carries more water, so a failed scoop hurts more because you just spent a slow approach for nothing.

The orange helicopter in the official gallery uses a bucket or snorkel hanging under the fuselage. Treat the hover as your “landing”: get the bucket into the lake, wait for fill, then lift vertically before you translate toward the fire. Do not copy a fixed-wing splashdown in a rotorcraft or you will roll it.

Ranks and when to switch airframes are on the plane tier list.

Why your scoop keeps failing

Too fast. You are bouncing. Flatten.

Too high. Blue on the minimap is not a fill. Descend until the hull or bucket is in the water.

Wrong water. Tiny decorative puddles and thin rivers are unreliable. Find a lake.

Crashed, not scooped. A vertical dive into water is a wreck. The round may respawn you with an empty tank. Reset attitude first.

Dumping on the climb-out. Space is hold-to-drop. If you still have a finger on it from the last pass, you empty the tank on takeoff. Release, fill, then hold Space only over fire.

How scooping ties to money

You do not get paid per scoop. You get paid when the round resolves, scaled by how much fire you actually killed and how much town you saved. A perfect lake landing with a dump on empty forest is a wasted cycle. Pair this page with Earn Money Fast and the drop planner.

In Town Defense, a dry tank during wave eight is how villages die. Assign one pilot as the dedicated scooper if you have a six-stack — roles are on the players hub. In Realistic, chain scoop-drop-scoop without sightseeing. In Mega Fire, lakes can sit inside the burn; scoop the upwind water so you are not landing in the cell you meant to kill.

Practice route

Vote Realistic. Ignore the first fire you see. Fly a rectangle: lake, climb, fire, lake. Time how long a full cycle takes on the starter. That cycle time is the real unit the money planner cares about, not a fantasy coins-per-minute number the game does not publish.

When the cycle is clean, add a town-priority rule: never dump a full tank more than a pass away from houses if houses are burning. That single rule is the difference between a fun flight and a cash round.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for FIRE PLANES pilots.

How do you refill water in FIRE PLANES?

Fly into a lake or pond until the tank fills. You must contact the water. Hovering above it does not scoop.

Can I scoop from rivers?

Narrow rivers are unreliable. Use a wide lake or pond and stay in the water long enough for the tank to register.

Why is scooping easier on a controller?

Analog pitch lets you hold a flat attitude on the surface. Keyboard players should tap pitch instead of holding W or S into a porpoise.

Does the helicopter scoop the same way?

Get the hanging bucket into the lake, wait for fill, then lift. Do not try a fixed-wing splashdown in the rotorcraft.
